Year 5

We are delighted to welcome you to Year 4 at Heronsgate School. This year group is made up of three classes:

• Toucans – Mrs. Gorania
• Kingfishers – Mr. Paine
• Penguins – Mr. Broadbent

Meet the Team: Meet the Team - Year 5 2025-26 (1)

Year 5 focuses on preparing pupils for Year 6, with a timetable similar to Year 4. Key areas include arithmetic and times tables recall. In the autumn term, children explore a range of topics, with a main project on The Tudors, culminating in a trip to Hampton Court in Autumn 2.

Autumn Term Overview

Mathematics We follow the White Rose scheme. This term, pupils will explore:

• Place value
• Addition and subtraction
• Statistics
• Multiplication and division
• Perimeter and area

Reading Our reading is linked to the topic IThe Tudors. this includes a novel study with The Devil and His Boy by Anthony Horrowitz. Our poems this term include Let There be Peace and Clockwork by Jacob Sam-La Rose.

Science In science we will focus on forces and mechanisms (autumn 1) and Space and the Solar System (autumn 2).

Project Work Our topic Off With Her Head builds on prior learning and explores the Tudor dynasty. In November, we visit Hampton Court in order to allow the children to immerse themselves in the life and times of the Tudors.

Reading Information

Each child will be assessed and given a reading book suited to their level. Further details about our reading curriculum can be found in the Reading section of this website.
