Gardening Club Courtyard 1A group of around 8 pupils from Years 3 to 6 take part in our weekly gardening club after school on Tuesdays. We have a great courtyard garden within the school of 5 by 4metres which includes 9 raised beds, our new ‘home made’ recycled plastic bottle greenhouse, compost bins and sheds.

Children learn to use a range of tools to prepare the soil by digging over and enriching it with our own compost. We plan and agree the crops the children would like to grow and take them through the process from buying the seeds to harvesting the produce.

Gardening Courtyard 2We’ve grown a range of vegetables this year including dwarf beans, onions, radishes, beetroot, potatoes, pumpkins, spinach and peas! Our tomatoes and cucumbers are thriving in the new greenhouse and we expect good crops.

Freshly picked produce is sold to parents and staff and the money is re-invested into seeds and other materials.

Gardening Courtyard and greenhouseThe children are also growing a range of soft fruit - strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, blueberries and blackcurrants and next term we will be making jam from the harvested fruit harvest under the supervision of Ol’ Ma Timmins and her famous country jam making recipes We also maintain an apple, cherry and plum tree at the front of the school.

Next year we hope to attract pollinators into the courtyard by planting a range of flowers.

We are looking for lots of budding gardeners to join us in September!
