We are delighted to welcome you to Year 4 at Heronsgate School. This year group is made up of three classes:
- Toucans – Mrs. Gorania
- Kingfishers – Mr. Paine
- Penguins – Mr. Broadbent
Meet the Team: Meet the Team - Year 5 2025-26 (1)
Year 5 focuses on preparing pupils for Year 6, with a timetable similar to Year 4. Key areas include arithmetic and times tables recall. In the autumn term, children explore a range of topics, with a main project on The Tudors, culminating in a trip to Hampton Court in Autumn 2.
Spring Term Overview
Mathematics We follow the White Rose scheme. This term, pupils will explore:
- Multiplication and division
- Fractions
- Perimeter and Area
- Decimals and Percentages

Reading This term we will focus on retrieval and inference questions. We will also explore how to answer 'impression' questions (for instance, 'what impression do you get of...')
Our key texts are 'The Last Wild' and 'Cosmic'.

Science In science we will focus on forces and mechanisms (autumn 1) and Space and the Solar System (autumn 2).
Project Work In SPring 1 our topic is Sow Grow Farm. This project teaches children about the features and characteristics of land use in agricultural regions across the world, including a detailed exploration of significant environmental areas.
Key language includes:
- Germination — the process by which a seed begins to grow into a plant
- Cultivation — preparing and working the land to grow crops
- Irrigation — supplying water to land or crops through controlled systems
- Photosynthesis — the process plants use to convert sunlight into energy
- Harvest — the act of gathering mature crops from the fields

Please note: Until February half term, Year 5 will be working with MK Dons each Friday afternoon. Please ensure your child wears comfortable clothes that allows them to be active (joggers, trainers etc.) as part of the lesson will involve being active.
Reading Information
Each child will be assessed and given a reading book suited to their level. Further details about our reading curriculum can be found in the Reading section of this website.
